The upcoming iPhone 17 is rumored to showcase an advanced anti-reflective display, boasting improved scratch resistance compared to the Ceramic Shield used in the iPhone 15 models. This information comes from a reliable source in Asia, stirring excitement among tech enthusiasts.
According to a leaker on Chinese social media platform Weibo, the new iPhone 17 will feature an outer glass layer with a “super-hard anti-reflective layer,” which is described as being “more scratch-resistant than you think.” Although the equipment needed for this innovation has recently been introduced to the Chinese supply chain, it will not arrive in time for incorporation into the forthcoming iPhone 16 series.
Apple’s Ceramic Shield, developed in partnership with Corning, has been marketed as the toughest glass available in any smartphone, significantly enhancing drop performance since its launch in the iPhone 12 models in 2020. This material has been praised for its durability, increasing protection against damage.
Samsung has recently unveiled its Galaxy S24 Ultra, featuring Gorilla Glass Armor panels, another creation from Corning. These panels are reported to reduce reflections by 75 percent while offering superior resistance to micro-scratches that can accumulate over time on other glass surfaces.
Corning claims that its Armor panels provide more than four times the scratch resistance of other aluminosilicate glasses. While it remains uncertain whether Apple will utilize Gorilla Glass Armor for the iPhone 17, the features described align closely with the leaker’s information.
Historically, Corning has been a reliable supplier for Apple, and any new technology developed may be branded differently for Apple’s products.
