Apple recently introduced new software updates, currently available only to developers. However, the company intends to release public betas for a range of its operating systems, including iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26. According to Apple, these public betas are expected to be available next month, in July.
Historically, Apple has launched public betas in July after conducting a few rounds of developer beta testing to refine features. This timeline helps ensure that the software is polished before a broader audience gains access. Looking back at previous release dates, we see a pattern in mid-July launches for public betas.
For instance, iOS 18 was released on July 15, iOS 17 on July 12, and iOS 16 on July 11, while earlier versions like iOS 15 launched slightly earlier on June 30. Given this historical context, we can speculate that the public beta could be available around July 14, following either the second or third developer beta, depending on the necessary fixes and refinements that arise during testing. Apple will offer public betas not just for its main operating systems, but also for HomePod Software 26 and AirPods firmware.
While beta firmware updates are generally not provided for public beta testers, the company’s beta website indicates that this will be a new option. Notably, Apple will not be releasing a visionOS public beta; that update will remain exclusive to developers. After the developer and public beta testing phases, the finalized software updates are scheduled for public launch in the fall.
