The anticipated specifications for the iPhone 17 base model are generating some mixed reactions. According to recent research from GF Securities, Apple analyst Jeff Pu indicates that the entry-level iPhone 17 will feature the same A18 chip as the current iPhone 16.
This chip will continue to be produced using TSMC’s second-generation 3nm technology, known as N3E. In contrast, the lighter iPhone 17 Air is expected to incorporate an A19 chip, while the Pro models will sport a more advanced A19 Pro chip, both using TSMC’s third-generation 3nm process, N3P.
Additionally, the rumor mill suggests that the iPhone 17 will have 8GB of RAM, the same as its predecessor. Last month, noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned that the iPhone 17 Air and Pro models would feature an upgraded 12GB of RAM, leaving the decision between 8GB or 12GB for the base model in limbo.
If Pu’s claims hold true, Apple has opted for 8GB for the base version. In terms of design, the iPhone 17 is anticipated to offer only a minor upgrade from the iPhone 16, with both devices appearing similar overall.
Noteworthy enhancements for the iPhone 17 may include a 120Hz display and a 24-megapixel front camera, improvements over the existing 60Hz and 12-megapixel front camera seen in the iPhone 16. Moreover, display industry expert Ross Young reports that the base iPhone 17 will feature an expanded 6.3-inch display, up from the iPhone 16’s 6.1 inches.
Apple is expected to officially announce the iPhone 17 series in September, setting the stage for its latest advancements in smartphone technology.
