iPhone 17 and ‘iPhone 17 Air’ May Include 120Hz ProMotion Displays, According to Latest Rumors – MacRumors

Recent reports suggest that all four models of the iPhone 17, set to be released in 2025, will feature low-power LTPO displays. An industry source cited by South Korea’s ETNews has pointed out that this technology likely indicates the inclusion of ProMotion displays with a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz across the entire iPhone 17 lineup.

ProMotion technology has traditionally been reserved for Apple’s Pro models, making its expansion to include the iPhone 17 and a rumored “iPhone 17 Air” particularly significant. Samsung and LG are expected to supply the LTPO displays, which afford the capability for smoother scrolling and enhanced video playback.

This low-temperature polycrystalline oxide technology allows for a variable refresh rate that helps conserve battery life during use. Historically, iPhone displays with ProMotion can adjust their refresh rates to balance performance with power consumption.

For example, while the iPhone 13 Pro can scale down to 10Hz, the more recent iPhone 14 Pro models can go as low as 1Hz, enabling persistent on-screen elements even when the device is locked. However, it remains unclear whether the upcoming iPhone 17 will feature the 10Hz or 1Hz capability.

Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, has indicated that ProMotion support is likely for both the iPhone 17 and the “iPhone 17 Air.” Rumors around this feature’s expansion have circulated for some time.

In contrast, the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus retain a 60Hz display. Apple is anticipated to unveil the iPhone 17 series in September 2025, continuing its tradition of innovative smartphone technology development.
