Issue with Duplicate Downloads Deletion in Safari 18.5 Discussed on MacRumors Forums

I am encountering an unusual problem with Safari version 18.5 on Sequoia version 15.5. When I attempt to download the same file for a second time, Safari no longer adds a “copy” or a numerical suffix such as “- 2” to the file name.

Instead, it seems to treat the new download as a duplicate of the existing file and subsequently deletes the original from the system. To explore this further, I tested another browser, Firefox, and found that it handles this situation differently.

In Firefox, when I download the same file again, it appropriately appends “- 1,” “- 2,” and so on, allowing me to keep multiple versions of the file easily. My question is: how can I restore this functionality in Safari so that it downloads a copy of the file instead of simply removing the previous download?

While I am aware that I can enable the “ask for file download location” option and rename the file manually each time, this solution feels cumbersome. It raises the question of why Safari cannot maintain this feature when other browsers can.

I am seeking assistance in regaining this useful functionality in Safari. Is this an issue that can be resolved through settings, or is it a feature that Apple has removed from Safari in recent updates?

Any guidance on how to address this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
