Recent reports regarding the iPhone 18 Pro have sparked two differing rumors from credible sources about how Apple plans to incorporate Face ID into the device’s display. These developments could significantly influence the design of the Dynamic Island feature and the overall appearance of the iPhone 18 Pro display. One report from Wayne Ma of *The Information* indicated that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max would feature a small hole cutout in the top-left corner for the front-facing camera. Ma’s description raises the possibility that these devices may not include a Dynamic Island, unless Apple chooses to maintain a traditional pill-shaped element in its upcoming iOS 27 software.
Developer Filip Vabroušek has visualized what this potential design might look like, showcasing the modified layout. However, this was countered by Counterpoint Research VP Ross Young, who asserts that the iPhone 18 Pro will retain some visible Face ID elements. Young believes this indicates that the devices will still incorporate a Dynamic Island, albeit a smaller iteration than those found in the iPhone 14 Pro through iPhone 16 models. Vabroušek has again provided an illustration of what this alternate design could entail.
Additionally, Mark Gurman from *Bloomberg* has mentioned that Apple plans to reduce the size of the Dynamic Island in at least some upcoming models. This adds to the growing consensus among various sources that the iPhone 18 series will feature a smaller Dynamic Island rather than just a cutout for the front camera. The ongoing debate over the iPhone 18 Pro’s display design is significant for potential upgraders next year, as it affects the overall user experience. Regarding the 20th anniversary iPhone, expected in 2027, Young has suggested that it will not feature a fully uninterrupted screen devoid of cutouts and that the first iPhone with under-screen Face ID and a front camera won’t arrive until 2030.
This implies that an entirely all-screen iPhone remains several years away.
