  • Randomly Failing 2013 MP USB Issues on MacRumors Forums

    Hello,

I have owned an 8-core 3 GHz Mac Pro 6,1 since early 2023, and it worked well until about three days after the return period expired. I began encountering recurring issues like freezing and video corruption. After shipping it back to OWC under warranty, they claimed to have adjusted something called ‘the watchdog.’

Despite this fix, I faced more problems. Over the following months, I would put the screen to sleep and leave the Mac Pro idle overnight. From my experience, I’ve learned that letting computers sleep can lead to issues.

I often found that the keyboard and mouse would become unresponsive each morning, while the rest of the system appeared to function normally. This was frustrating, especially since it sometimes occurred during intensive development work. I suspected that my USB hub might be the culprit, but the problem persisted even when I connected directly.

Feeling increasingly frustrated, I considered selling the Mac Pro, but the offers were disappointing. Eventually, I disassembled it with the intention of selling it for parts. However, after a major illness and some recovery time, I reassembled the Mac Pro because I needed a machine for software testing that was more up-to-date than my 2012 Mini.

Thanks to some guides from iFixit, it booted up successfully, though the keyboard and mouse issue returned. Financially, I’m unable to buy a new machine at the moment. I’m saving for an M4 Mini with 32 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD, but progress is slow.

I’d prefer not to use my 2012 Mini as it runs Catalina and cannot be upgraded further. The 2013 Mac Pro still supports Monterey, allowing me to use essential software for my work. I’ve tried several remedies:

    – Removing unnecessary USB devices, leaving only my keyboard and mouse connected,
    – Using pmset commands in Terminal to disable background sleep functions, which slightly improved the situation,
    – Searching for affordable Thunderbolt 2 to USB docks but found prices too high,
    – Pairing a Bluetooth keyboard so that I can shut down properly if the USB fails.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with the 2013 Mac Pro? If so, were there any strategies that helped mitigate the USB problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

  • Thunderbolt 3 Connectivity on Mac Mini M4 Pro: Discussion on MacRumors Forums

I haven’t attempted it yet, but I have my display connected through the dock while the SSD enclosure is directly linked to my Mac for ease of access. From your original post, it wasn’t clear that the SSD enclosure was not connected to the dock. If you intend to connect the SSD to the dock when you upgrade to the M4 Pro Mac mini, you should consider the following question: Does the write speed decrease significantly when the SSD is connected to the dock along with the display? If the performance remains stable, switching to a new dock may not yield significant improvements.

The write speed of 1500 MB/s equates to approximately 12 Gbps. In contrast, a high-performing NVMe drive connected via Thunderbolt 3 can reach speeds around 22 Gbps. It’s possible that the controller in your SSD enclosure is limiting your NVMe speeds. Additionally, it would be worthwhile to check the specifications of your NVMe to understand its expected performance when not connected via Thunderbolt.

A typical Thunderbolt 3 dock can manage a maximum of around 25 Gbps for regular data transfer since Thunderbolt 3 supports 40 Gbps total bandwidth excluding display data. The bandwidth allocation for video resolutions varies: a 4K60 display uses about 16 Gbps, a 5K60 display around 28 Gbps, and a 6K60 display with Display Stream Compression (DSC) consumes about 15.4 Gbps. In contrast, the CalDigit TS3+ dock features a 1 Gbps PCIe Ethernet controller and USB ports that share bandwidth. In a Thunderbolt 5 dock, USB devices typically connect to the USB 3.1 gen 2 controller with a bandwidth of 9.7 Gbps.

This arrangement means all connected USB devices would share that bandwidth. Furthermore, Thunderbolt 5 docks may also integrate PCIe lanes, allowing for faster connections to NVMe devices or PCIe Ethernet adapters.

  • What are some practical uses for an extra 2019 MacBook Air?

I recently acquired a base 2019 MacBook Air, which I successfully repaired after encountering a keyboard issue. The previous owner had upgraded to an M4 model, leaving me with this Intel-powered MacBook Air while I also own an M2 version. Now, I’m considering how to maximize the use of this device beyond simply serving as a spare or travel laptop.

Despite its barebone specifications of 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it performs quite well without noticeable lag. Additionally, the battery life appears to be in good condition, estimated to be above 80%. One potential use case could be as a dedicated machine for light tasks.

Given its capability, it would excel in handling basic functions such as web browsing, document editing, and media consumption. This makes it an ideal choice for students or professionals who need a lightweight device for everyday use. Another possibility is to repurpose it for creative endeavors.

It could become a portable writing station, perfect for jotting down ideas or crafting stories in a distraction-free environment. Alternatively, it could serve as a secondary screen for a more powerful computer, enhancing productivity during video editing or multitasking scenarios. Additionally, if I were to explore programming or coding, this MacBook could function as a testing environment for software development.

Its lightweight nature makes it easy to carry while exploring new programming languages or frameworks. Ultimately, this 2019 MacBook Air has the potential for varied applications, transforming it from a simple spare device into a functional tool for creativity or productivity.

  • Top Rumored Features of the iPhone 17 Lineup: What to Expect

With less than two months until the anticipated launch of Apple’s iPhone 17 models, the rumor mill has been buzzing with insights and speculations. We’ve compiled the most intriguing forecasts, along with a few aspects that might not be as favorable. One of the most exciting rumors is the introduction of the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, marking the first significant redesign in years. This model promises a lightweight feel, similar to Samsung’s sleek Galaxy S25 Edge.

Another notable addition is a muted orange-like hue for the iPhone 17 Pro, an appealing color that we haven’t encountered in previous iterations. Additionally, all models are expected to feature a 24-megapixel selfie camera, enhancing photo and video quality for social media enthusiasts. The iPhone 17 Pro and Air may also boost their RAM to 12GB, providing improved performance for gaming and AI capabilities. Furthermore, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumored to boast a remarkable battery capacity of around 5,000mAh, surpassing the previous model.

The standard iPhone 17 is speculated to come in nostalgic green and purple shades and will be slightly larger at 6.3 inches. Other enhancements include the possibility of 120Hz ProMotion refresh rates across all models, a two-material design featuring more metal, and an upgraded 48-megapixel telephoto lens for better zoomed shots. However, not all changes are seen positively. The horizontal camera bar on the Pro models may be unwelcome for some, potentially diminishing aesthetic appeal due to an increased camera bump.

There’s also the concern that Apple might switch from titanium to aluminum for the Pro models, which might feel like a downgrade in build quality. On the downside, we might face price increases due to tariffs, and the iPhone 17 Air will likely feature only a single-lens camera due to space constraints, limiting its versatility. Lastly, the standard model is expected to retain only 8GB of RAM, potentially hindering future capabilities in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.

  • Analyst Predicts Production of Foldable iPhone and iPad to Begin Next Year – MacRumors

Apple’s anticipated foldable devices, including the first foldable iPhone and iPad, are reportedly entering production soon. Analyst Jeff Pu has stated that these new products have recently reached the New Product Introduction (NPI) phase at Foxconn. According to Pu’s research note with GF Securities, mass production is expected to commence in the latter half of 2026, with an early prototyping phase starting as soon as April of this year. While specific details about the devices remain scarce, industry speculation suggests the foldable iPhone may feature an inner display of up to 8 inches.

Meanwhile, the foldable iPad could boast a considerably larger screen of up to 19 inches. Pu also indicated that Apple’s iPhone shipment projections for 2025 might be “lukewarm,” a factor attributed to delays in introducing personalized Siri features. Looking ahead, Pu anticipates that the launch of these foldable devices will significantly bolster Foxconn’s business in 2026. After several years of rumors surrounding Apple’s intention to release foldable products, the recent developments imply that a launch may not be too far off—potentially either in late 2026 or by 2027, depending on the timeline for mass production.

In related news, there are forthcoming public beta releases for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26, expected around July 23. As Apple prepares for these updates, excitement continues to build around the upcoming iPhone 17 series, which is rumored to include a redesigned Dynamic Island interface and various color options, based on leaked internal documents. Amid this buzz, analysts project the foldable iPhone could come with a hefty starting price ranging from $1,800 to $2,000, positioning it as the most expensive iPhone model to date.

  • Kuo: Foldable iPhone to Use Liquid Metal Hinges for Enhanced Durability, Reports MacRumors

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that Apple is utilizing liquid metal for the hinges of its forthcoming foldable iPhone. This innovative approach aims to enhance the durability of the device while reducing common issues associated with foldable screens, such as creasing. Liquid metal, produced through a die-casting process, has been selected by Apple to tackle these challenges.

This strategic choice is expected to improve screen flatness and minimize the crease marks that often affect folding displays. Notably, while Apple has previously incorporated liquid metal in smaller elements like SIM ejector pins, this will be its first significant application in a pivotal mechanical component for a device. Reports indicate that Dongguan EonTec will serve as the exclusive supplier of this liquid metal.

The foldable iPhone is anticipated to feature a display size of 7.8 inches when unfolded and 5.5 inches for the cover display. The design is thought to resemble the book-style format seen in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold, rather than adopting a clamshell design. Additionally, Kuo has suggested that this upcoming device may come equipped with two rear cameras and a single front-facing camera, with Touch ID integrated into the power button.

When unfolded, the device could measure just 4.5 mm thick and between 9 mm and 9.5 mm when closed. Mass production is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026, potentially leading to a release in late 2026 or early 2027. As for the pricing, analysts have projected that the foldable iPhone will start between $1,800 and $2,000, potentially making it the most expensive iPhone to date.
