Apple is set to launch a second-generation AirTag next year, promising significant improvements in item tracking capabilities. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that the new AirTag will feature a “considerably” longer range thanks to Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, which was introduced with the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. This advanced chip offers up to three times the range of the original technology used in the current AirTag model. The Precision Finding feature incorporated into the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models may also be included in the upcoming AirTag, allowing users to easily track their belongings over a range of approximately 60 meters (around 200 feet).
This improvement is expected to enhance the overall usability of the device. Gurman mentions that the new AirTag is anticipated to be released around mid-2025, marking a four-year gap since the first generation was unveiled in April 2021. Alongside the extended tracking range, the new model will have a built-in speaker that is more secure and difficult to remove, addressing safety concerns related to stalking. However, Gurman does not foresee any significant design changes to the AirTag when it is updated.
In addition to AirTag developments, speculation surrounds the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models, which are expected to launch in September this year. Rumors suggest changes to the positioning of the Apple logo on the back and enhancements to battery capacity, particularly with the Pro Max model reportedly featuring the largest battery ever in an iPhone. As the tech community anticipates these updates, Apple continues to maintain its leading position in various technology markets.
