Switching from Windows PC: MBP for Xcode, AutoCAD, and Fusion on MacRumors Forums

Good morning, Mac users! I hope you’re all doing well. This year, I’m refreshing my Apple ecosystem, having already upgraded my Apple Watch and iPhone. Now, I’m focusing on AirTags, AirPods Pro, and a MacBook Pro, which will be my very first Mac.

The MacBook Pro is a key item for me, as I need it for professional editing software and an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). Although I won’t primarily use it for gaming—with the exception of occasional Roblox sessions—I currently depend on my ThinkPad X1 Extreme Carbon Gen 2 for rendering, modeling graphics, and compiling Java and C++ code in Visual Studio. I’ve heard Swift works seamlessly with Xcode, making it ideal for building and publishing apps on the App Store, and I can’t wait to make this upgrade. I’ve encountered mixed reviews regarding the M1 Pro, M2 Max, and M3 chips.

While gaming isn’t my focus, I’m keen on these powerful machines. I’ve seen that Best Buy and B&H are offering some good deals on MacBooks that aren’t the M4 model. These machines run on Apple Intelligence and should be reliable for at least five years. However, I doubt a MacBook Air will meet my requirements, given its limited RAM capabilities, even though prices have dropped below $900.

Now I need to choose the configuration. Should I go with the Midnight or Space Gray color? If I select the M1 MacBook Pro, I prefer opting for the Touch Bar. Additionally, I’d appreciate advice on transferring files from my Windows machine to my Mac.

I have several USB drives with 128GB storage that I hope to use for a Time Machine backup. Please let me know if I’ve misunderstood any technical details, as my experience with Macs has been limited to light use in school. Any tips on Handoff features and integrating my new Mac with my other Apple products, like unlocking it with my Apple Watch, would also be welcome! Thank you for your time and support!
