Apple has reintroduced the HomePod, which now features a built-in temperature and humidity sensor. This capability is also being made available on the existing HomePod mini models, which had the sensor included since their launch but was dormant until now.
Users can take advantage of this functionality to create smart home automations, such as closing blinds or turning on fans or heaters based on specific environmental conditions. The integration of this sensor allows users to monitor indoor climates directly through the Home app, treating it like any other smart home accessory.
According to Apple, the sensor is optimized for indoor use, effectively measuring temperatures between 15ºC and 30ºC, and relative humidity levels between 30% and 70%. However, performance may be affected when the HomePod is playing audio at high volumes for extended periods, as it generates heat that could influence temperature readings.
Additionally, the device requires some time to calibrate the sensors after being powered on before providing accurate data. An update on HomePod software version 16.3 has enabled the temperature and humidity sensor functionality in the HomePod mini, confirming that this feature is now active for all existing units.
