Anticipation continues to build as we await the launch of Apple’s long-rumored AirTag 2. Reports and speculation surrounding this item-tracking accessory have been circulating, with a number of updates on its potential features and release timing. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg mentioned in his Power On newsletter that the new AirTag is “nearly ready” for launch.
He previously indicated that it could be released around the middle of 2025, a timeframe that is swiftly approaching. However, Gurman cautioned that it was unlikely the announcement would coincide with the recent WWDC, which concluded without any new product reveals. Given Apple’s typical schedule, the period between WWDC and the annual iPhone event in September is usually devoid of product launches.
This suggests that if the mid-2025 timeline is correct, the AirTag 2 may be revealed through a press release on Apple’s Newsroom site, which is a common method for announcing minor accessory updates. However, the precise timing of this announcement remains uncertain. It’s conceivable that “mid-2025” could extend to September, leaving open the possibility of the AirTag 2 debuting alongside the iPhone 17 series.
Currently, it might not be the best time to purchase the existing AirTag unless you urgently need one or are indifferent to the forthcoming features. So far, three enhancements have been suggested for the AirTag 2: the inclusion of a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip for an increased tracking range, improved integration with Apple’s spatial computing ecosystem, and a tamper-proof speaker to mitigate misuse for stalking purposes. No significant design changes are anticipated for the new model, which was originally introduced in April 2021.
In the U.S., individual AirTags are priced at $29, while a pack of four sells for $99.
