With the launch of iOS 26, CarPlay has introduced an innovative feature called Smart Display Zoom. This setting allows the interface to automatically adjust its size to better fit different vehicle dashboard screens. Activating this feature makes all user interface elements smaller, enabling an additional row of app icons to appear on the screen, thus enhancing usability. Olivia Hess, a CarPlay software engineer, explains that the variety in vehicle screen shapes and sizes necessitates this adjustment capability.
“In iOS 26, some screen configurations allow drivers to adjust their display scale through Smart Display Zoom located in CarPlay settings,” she noted. This feature is a welcome addition for many users looking for better optimization of their CarPlay experience. Currently, iOS 26 is in developer beta, and a public beta will be available next month. The final update is expected to be rolled out in September for iPhone models starting with the iPhone 11 and newer.
The iPadOS 26 also received significant updates, closely mirroring functionalities found in Macs, although Apple has chosen not to implement macOS on iPads. In an interview, Apple’s software engineering chief, Craig Federighi, clarified the reasoning behind this decision. Moreover, Apple’s iOS 26 brings a new design material called Liquid Glass, which emphasizes transparency and readability. However, concerns about usability have led to the introduction of accessibility options to adjust the opacity of the interface for better visibility.
In addition to these features, iPhone users can look forward to the ability to stream videos directly to the CarPlay screen while parked, enhancing entertainment options. Overall, iOS 26 presents exciting advancements across Apple’s ecosystem, fostering greater integration and user experience.
