Recent rumors suggest that all four iPhone 17 models will utilize advanced metalens technology for Face ID, as reported by Jeff Pu, an analyst from GF Securities. In an investor research note issued earlier this month, Pu indicated that this innovation could lead to a reduction in the physical size of some Face ID components, potentially resulting in a smaller Dynamic Island. A leaker known as Digital Chat Station corroborated this claim, stating that the iPhone 17 Pro Max would indeed feature a metalens that integrates both transmitter and receiver components.
This change is expected to make the Dynamic Island smaller across various models, including the base iPhone 17, the ultra-slim iPhone 17 Air, and the compact iPhone 17 Pro. Earlier predictions from Pu suggested a narrower Dynamic Island in the iPhone 17 Pro Max; however, the broader application of the metalens across all models may enhance this feature for all devices in the series. Contradicting these more recent insights, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo emphasized that he anticipates the size of the Dynamic Island to remain largely unchanged among the iPhone 17 series.
Given the credibility of all three sources, it remains unclear whether there will be any significant alterations to the Dynamic Island’s dimensions. Looking ahead, rumors also speculate that the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models might introduce an under-screen Face ID feature, further streamlining the design with only a small front camera hole. As Apple’s September unveil date approaches for the iPhone 17 series, expectations are high, with additional speculation about new features and differences between the Pro and Pro Max models.
