According to recent reports, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models featuring displays manufactured by BOE will be sold exclusively in China. This move comes as BOE has ramped up its OLED production capacity to play a significant role in Apple’s supply chain. The company has received approval from Apple for mass production of its latest displays.
However, these specific models will only be available in the Chinese market. Currently, Apple primarily sources its OLED panels for iPhones from South Korean suppliers, Samsung Display and LG Display. BOE has faced challenges in matching the brightness, efficiency, and durability of the displays from its competitors.
In May 2022, Apple had to halt BOE’s participation in the iPhone 13’s supply chain when unauthorized design modifications were detected. This situation arose when BOE, struggling with component shortages, adjusted the circuit width of thin-film transistors without Apple’s consent, prompting Apple to suspend their production. Since then, BOE has been working to regain Apple’s trust, eventually being allowed to supply limited quantities of OLED panels for the iPhone 14.
The company aims to expand its role in iPhone production and increase its share in Apple’s competitive display supply chain. In related news, a new Apple TV is anticipated to launch later this year with various rumored features, including faster Wi-Fi support through Apple’s own chip. Additionally, there is excitement about the upcoming Apple Watch Ultra 3, expected to bring satellite connectivity and 5G support.
As the release of the iPhone 17 series approaches, new design changes and updates are also anticipated, although significant alterations may not arrive until next year’s iPhone 18 models. Apple has previously discussed the launch of public betas for iOS 26 and plans to close its store at Westfield Hornsby in Australia.
