iPhone 15 Pro Max Features 5x Optical Zoom and 25x Digital Zoom – MacRumors

The iPhone 15 Pro Max has introduced a notable advancement with its new Telephoto lens, which incorporates a tetraprism design to achieve 5x optical zoom. This is an upgrade from the 3x zoom featured in the iPhone 15 Pro and the previous iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models.

The enhanced optical zoom capability allows for a corresponding digital zoom of up to 25x. Although this represents a significant improvement for Apple, it still lags behind competitors such as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which boasts a 100x Space Zoom feature.

Unlike digital zoom, which relies on software to enhance images through cropping, optical zoom utilizes the hardware capabilities of the camera to ensure a clear and sharp picture. This distinction is crucial as Apple has historically steered clear of extensive digital zoom due to concerns over image quality.

While the 5x optical zoom is exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max and not available on the iPhone 15 Pro, both models benefit from upgrades to the camera system. The main camera now features 48 megapixels with a larger sensor designed to capture more light, alongside adjustable focal lengths of 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm.

Additionally, there is a revamped 13mm Ultra Wide camera and second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization. Looking ahead, Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series in September, with rumors suggesting notable changes for the Pro models.

These changes may include the repositioning of the Apple logo and variations in battery size, particularly for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which is rumored to feature the largest battery ever in an iPhone. As Apple continues to strengthen its product offerings, consumers can anticipate significant innovations in its upcoming devices.
