iOS 26 to Enable U.S. Passport Integration in Wallet for Identity Verification – MacRumors

In the upcoming iOS 26, Apple is set to introduce a new Digital ID feature that enhances its ongoing integration of Driver’s Licenses within the Wallet app. Beginning this fall, iPhone users will be able to add their U.S. passports to the Wallet, allowing them to use a digital passport instead of a physical one for domestic travel. The Digital ID can be conveniently stored on either an iPhone or an Apple Watch and can be utilized at select TSA checkpoints across the United States.

This feature is compliant with Real ID standards, meaning that users can present their digital passport in lieu of a Real ID while traveling. However, it is important to note that Digital IDs do not replace physical passports. Apple cautions that for international travel or border crossings, a physical passport will still be necessary.

For domestic flights, this new feature will enable smoother and quicker passage through TSA checkpoints. In addition to serving as a travel document, Digital IDs will also facilitate age and identity verification in various contexts, including apps, retail locations, and, for the first time in iOS 26, on websites. The addition of passport support in the Wallet app will greatly expand the scope of digital identification available to iPhone users.

Currently, the implementation of IDs in the Wallet app has been gradually expanding across U.S. states and territories, but it is currently available in a limited number of locations, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, New Mexico, Ohio, and Puerto Rico. Moreover, Apple is introducing enhanced travel features to the Wallet app, including an improved boarding pass experience that offers users a Live Activity overview of their flights and real-time updates. This feature will also include options to access Maps for airport navigation and use Find My to track luggage.

Major airlines such as Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and others are partnering with Apple to support the updated boarding pass functionality.
