Apple Unveils HomePod mini Featuring Spherical Design and S5 Chip Priced at $99 – MacRumors

Apple recently unveiled the HomePod mini, a compact smart speaker featuring a fresh spherical design and powered by the S5 chip. This announcement was made during the company’s “Hi, Speed” event, marking the first new addition to the HomePod lineup since the original model. Measuring just 3.3 inches tall—significantly smaller than the original HomePod’s 6.8 inches—the HomePod mini offers a stylish redesign.

Despite its size, it maintains the capabilities of its predecessor, boasting Siri integration, smart home features, and impressive audio quality. The S5 processor, which is also found in the Apple Watch Series 5 and Apple Watch SE, enables “Computational audio” for enhanced sound delivery. It includes a full-range dynamic driver and two passive radiators for deep bass, accompanied by an acoustic waveguide that produces 360-degree sound.

The device’s sophisticated tuning models ensure optimal loudness and dynamic range. The HomePod mini is equipped with a backlit touch surface for volume control, playback, and Siri activation. When paired with multiple HomePod mini speakers, users can enjoy synchronized music or podcasts across various rooms or create a stereo pair in a single space for a richer audio experience.

In addition to compatibility with Apple Music, the device supports various podcasts and radio services, with more music platforms expected to launch soon. A forthcoming handoff feature will allow seamless interaction with an iPhone, enhancing user experience through visual, audio, and haptic feedback. An innovative “Intercom” function will also enable messaging between HomePods and other Apple devices.

Priced at $99, the HomePod mini will be available in White and Space Gray, with pre-orders starting on November 6 and deliveries set to begin on November 16.
